🎙 In this expectation vs. reality episode of City Rights Radio, Yusuf and I (Mohamed Bah) dive into the ways the Dutch exclusion system creates inferiority complexes among undocumented people, stripping us of the continuity of life that so many take for granted. We explore how constant uncertainty, lack of recognition, and systemic barriers make it nearly impossible to build a stable future. But could a City Card be a game-changer? We argue that having such a card could open doors to essential services, jobs, and opportunities, allowing undocumented people to continue their lives—regardless of how the IND handles our cases. Mpanzu Bamenga, who is currently serving as a member of the Tweede Kamer (Dutch House of Representatives), has been a key figure in the fight against racial profiling. In collaboration with Amnesty International and others, he organized a lawsuit challenging the Koninklijke Marechaussee’s discriminatory border checks in the Netherlands. Although the case was lost in court, it led to a significant victory—the Koninklijke Marechaussee has now declared they will no longer engage in ethnic profiling. A major win for justice and human rights! Beyond this legal battle, we explore how a City Card, like those in New York (IDNYC) and New Haven, could enhance safety, provide access to services, and offer recognition for undocumented and marginalized communities in Amsterdam. 🎙 City Rights Radio is a platform amplifying the voices of migrants, undocumented people, and marginalized communities.
